What is Yin and Yang? How Do We Distinguish Between Them?

Yin and Yang, where "Yin" (阴) refers to darkness, and "Yang"(阳) refers to brightness.

To better understand these concepts, let's look at examples from everyday life: Spring and summer are considered Yang, while fall and winter are Yin; daytime is Yang, nighttime is Yin; the front of your body is Yang, and your back is Yin; upward movement is Yang, and downward is Yin.

So, how do we distinguish Yin from Yang?

Starting with simple contrasts, let's expand this idea to daily behaviors. Someone with a quick temper is more Yang, while someone who procrastinates is more Yin. Regular exercise is Yang, while inactivity is Yin. Eating is Yang, and skipping meals is Yin. Picture a person who rarely exercises, tends to procrastinate, and doesn’t eat much—they might appear physically weaker and give off a more subdued, low-energy vibe, suggesting an imbalance of Yin. On the other hand, a person who works out daily, eats regularly, and is always on the go will likely have a stronger physique and exude a more vibrant, outward energy, reflecting an abundance of Yang.

In short: activities that are intense, rising, bright, outgoing, and warm are considered Yang; while those that are still, descending, dark, inward, and cold are Yin.

The Dao De Jing, a classical Daoist text, states: "The Dao gives birth to one, one gives birth to two, two gives birth to three, and three give birth to all things. Everything carries Yin and embraces Yang, achieving harmony through balance."

This means that all things in the universe are born from the interaction of Yin and Yang. Whether it’s the sky and the earth, the sun and the moon, men and women, or even the organs within our bodies—everything can be classified as either Yin or Yang. For example, the sky is Yang, the earth is Yin; the sun is Yang, the moon is Yin; men are Yang, women are Yin. Even the organs in our bodies have their own Yin-Yang distinctions.

Yin and Yang manifest in countless ways throughout our lives, and understanding their balance can help you better comprehend your own experiences and identify the root of problems. In Chinese culture, there is a saying: "Harmony between Yin and Yang brings prosperity and success." In our next post, we will discuss how to leverage the balance between Yin and Yang to improve your daily life.
