Fu (福-Good Fortune)

The character "Fu" (福), meaning "blessing" or "good fortune," is widely known and cherished in Chinese culture. The earliest renowned "Greatest Fu in the World" dates back to the 12th year of Emperor Kangxi's reign, in 1673. During this time, Kangxi's grandmother, Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang, was approaching her 60th birthday when she suddenly fell ill. Despite summoning the best physicians in the land, her condition did not improve, leaving Kangxi both anxious and frustrated. Deeply indebted to his grandmother for his own success, he decided to seek divine intervention since his subjects could not help.

Following the guidance of a Buddhist monk, who suggested "seeking blessings to extend life," Kangxi fasted and purified himself for three days. In a moment of inspiration, he wrote the character "Fu" on a piece of paper. He then had it carved into a stone slab by the most skilled artisans in the country. Carrying the stone himself to the temple, he knelt before it and prayed to the heavens for his grandmother's recovery. After seven days and nights, Empress Dowager Xiaozhuang's health gradually improved. Overjoyed, Kangxi enshrined the "Fu" character in the palace to serve as a protective blessing.

Peace

In China, there are various deities believed to protect people's safety, and they can be found almost everywhere. Examples include the Earth God (Tudigong), the City God (Chenghuang), and the Mountain God, all of whom are revered as guardians of peace and safety. According to legend, Tudigong, originally named Zhang Fude, was a high-ranking tax official in the imperial court. He was diligent and compassionate, doing many good deeds for the people throughout his life. When he passed away at the age of 102, his appearance remained as serene as in life for three days.

Seeing this, a poor villager built a small stone shrine to worship him, and not long after, the villager's fortune changed for the better. People believed they were under the protection of Zhang Fude, so they erected golden statues and built temples to honor him, praying for wealth and peace.

While Tudigong is known as the guardian of the land, Chenghuang is regarded as the protector of cities. In Daoism, the City God is a deity who safeguards the peace of an entire city, receiving abundant offerings from the people.

Unlike a specific deity, "Chenghuang" is actually a title or position, similar to the ancient roles of county magistrates or governors. The broader the area of the city he oversees, the higher his rank and responsibilities. Thus, every city has its own Chenghuang with a unique identity. However, the duty of every Chenghuang remains the same: to protect the city from evil and harm, serving as the guardian of countless citizens and receiving reverence from people through the ages.
