The pendant is shaped like a traditional Chinese 'Awakened Lion' (also known as a 'Southern Lion') holding the character 'Fu' (good fortune) in its mouth. The 'Awakened Lion' is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring blessings, often referred to as the 'Auspicious Lion.' In Chinese culture, the awakened lion symbolizes good fortune, prosperity, and wealth, as well as the spirit of courage and perseverance.

Historically, almost every village in ancient China would hold a lion dance ceremony during important festivals, with drums and gongs to express hopes for a bright future and the strength to face challenges. Traditionally, awakened lion figurines were also given as gifts to infants on their first full month or first birthday, symbolizing wishes for the child’s future wisdom, strength, and well-being.

Lion Dance

In Foshan, Guangdong, the birthplace of the awakened lion dance, there is a legend about the origin of the lion dance. In ancient times, a one-horned monster with large eyes and a wide mouth frequently appeared at night, destroying crops and harming livestock, causing unrest in the village. 

The villagers decided to scare the beast away by using the king of beasts, the lion. They crafted a lion head out of bamboo and colored paper, and a lion tail from colorful cloth. With drums and gongs, they selected strong and agile young men to ambush the beast at its usual haunt. When the monster appeared, the drums thundered, and the lions charged toward it, scaring it off. From then on, the tradition of lion dancing to ward off evil became a local custom.
